Schools rely on parents, professionals to help clean up after Irma

Schools prepare to re-open after Irma Power outages across Hillsborough County have forced the school district to keep students away from campus until Monday. But clean up is well underway at schools across the viewing area. ABC Action News reporter Katie LaGrone reports. HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. - It takes hands to clean up the yard and heart when it's not your own. On Tuesday morning, hands and heart were seen picking up debris and branches Hurricane Irma left behind at Ballast Point Elementary School. "Parents can rally together and get things cleaned up," said Kim Frederick whose step-son goes to Ballast Point. Frederick drove from St. Petersburg after receiving a text from the school's principal inviting parents to help clean up the school's yard. "They asked for shovels and rakes, we didn't have that but we threw our wagon in the truck and headed across the bridge. Whatever we can do to help, we're happy to help," she

WASHINGTON — Six Baltimore police officers will face no federal charges in the death of Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old black man who died of a severe spinal cord injury while in custody, the Justice Department announced on Tuesday. “After an extensive review of this tragic event, conducted by career prosecutors and investigators, the Justice Department concluded that the evidence is insufficient,” the department said in a statement, adding that it was unable to prove the officers “willfully violated Gray’s civil rights.” The closure of the criminal civil rights investigation into Mr. Gray’s death, which prompted unrest in Baltimore, a predominantly black city, and a federal examination of its police dep

GOP split over fixing or gutting Obamacare as deadline looms

“I don’t see it,” said Sen. Jeff Flake of the chances of passing a last gasp effort to repeal some of the health care law and replace it with a block grant program to the states, a move he supports. | John Shinke/POLITICO Republicans are paralyzed over what to do about health care, caught between a bipartisan effort to shore up Obamacare and the opportunity to take one last swing at their years-long promise to repeal the law. Leaders of both efforts have less than three weeks to gather enough support to convince Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to either take another partisan shot at the Affordable Care Act or begin bipartisan reforms. Key procedural powers for the GOP to repeal the law expire on Sept. 30, and insurance companies desperate for certainty have until Sept. 27 to decide whether to participate in Obamacare markets next year. A group of senators is making a last gasp effort to repeal some of the law and repl

Pinellas Co. businesses struggle with little fuel, no power

Irma Recover: Businesses still without power after Hurricane Irma. Frustrations over the search for gas after Hurricane Irma. PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. - Businesses in Tampa Bay are hitting a major roadblock. Like many of us, they can’t find fuel! Chris Palms of Majestic Plumbing and Rick Sirois of Clearview Lawn and Landscaping have never been this busy. “We’ve been going since 3 his morning," Palms enthusiastically said as he tried to repair a water pipe busted by a fallen tree. “My customers have been calling non stop saying 'no hurry but we need you right now.'” It’s tough to get the job done, when you don’t have the most important tool: gas! “You go by all these stations that have nothing. The ones that do have it, have a huge line,” Sirois explained. The longer he waits at the pump, the fewer trees he can haul out of people’s pools and off their roofs, “Everything I do runs on gas. Mowers, chainsaws, blowers, all of it and the vehicle.” Palms wasn’t

Lawmakers to force Trump to formally condemn white supremacists

President Donald Trump sparked an uproar last month when he responded to the Charlottesville rally by condemning "hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides." | Evan Vucci/AP Photo Congress is preparing to put a bipartisan squeeze on President Donald Trump to condemn white supremacists and commit his administration s resources to combating domestic terrorism by neo-Nazis and other racist groups. A day after the Senate easily passed legislation condemning last month s violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, House leaders signaled they re preparing to take it up on Tuesday evening. The House version was introduced last week by Rep. Tom Garrett (R-Va.), a conservative freshman who represents Charlottesville, and it has the backing of Virginia s entire delegation of seven Republicans and four Democrats. After the House clears the Senate measure, it will land on Trump s desk. Though resolutions are often pas

Supreme Court Allows Trump Administration To Block Refugees With Resettlement Agency Assurances

The order is a victory for the Trump administration, which argued against the expanded refugee protections. The Supreme Court will allow the Trump administration to keep blocking a large group of would-be refugees from entering the US during the 120-day halt to the refugee program under President Trump s travel ban executive order. Hawaii had successfully argued to lower courts that the group of approximately 24,000 people — would-be refugees who have received assurances of support from resettlement agencies — were the type of people intended to be exempt from President Trump s travel and refugee ban under a June order from the Supreme Court. The justices exempted those with a "credible claim of a bona fide relationship" to a US person or entity from the refugee ban, which affects those from anywhere in the world, and the 90-day travel ban from six Muslim-majority countries. The fight between the government and lawyers for Hawaii, whi

Supreme Court lets Trump ban on most refugees stand

The justices said in June that the administration could not enforce the bans against people who have a "bona fide" relationship with people or entities in the United States. | Getty WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court is allowing the Trump administration to maintain its restrictive policy on refugees. The justices on Tuesday agreed to an administration request to block a lower court ruling that would have eased the refugee ban and allowed up to 24,000 refugees to enter the country before the end of October. The order was not the court s last word on the travel policy that President Donald Trump first rolled out in January. The justices are scheduled to hear arguments on Oct. 10 on the legality of the bans on travelers from six mostly Muslim countries and refugees anywhere in the world. It s unclear, though, what will be left for the court to decide. The 90-day travel ban lapses in late September and the 120-day refugee b

Officers involved in Freddie Gray s death won t face federal charges

The Associated Press is reporting that six officers involved in the arrest of Freddy Gray — a young black man who died in the custody of Baltimore Police in 2015 — will not face federal charges. The U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday that the officers would not face charges from the federal government. Six officers were charged at the state level, three of which were acquitted. Three others had their cases dropped. Gray died on April 19, 2015, a week after he suffered a spinal injury while in custody after he was arrested for carrying a switchblade a week earlier.

In Testimony, Women Describe Robert Menendez’s Role in Getting Visas

Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey is on trial on charges that he helped a wealthy doctor and political donor in exchange for luxury gifts. NEWARK — Rosiell Polanco received a surprise call in 2008 from the United States consulate in the Dominican Republic, roughly a week after her visa had been initially rejected, summoning her for a second interview, she testified in a federal courtroom here on Tuesday. The call came after she had reached out to Dr. Salomon Melgen, a wealthy ophthalmologist from South Florida who had invited her and her sister to visit him, and told him that her visa had been rejected. He assured her that he would call Senator Robert Menendez to get the situation rectified. “He told me that he was going to try to fix it, that he was going to talk to the senator,” Ms. Polanco testified, speaking in Spanish through a translator. Following a second interview and a review of her application, Ms. Polanco and her sister, Korall, were given visas. T

Congress Just Voted To Condemn White Supremacy And Violence In The Wake Of Charlottesville

The bill now heads to President Donald Trump s desk. Congress has passed a joint resolution "condemning the violence and domestic terrorist attack" in Charlottesville, Virginia, in early August, and urging President Donald Trump and his administration to combat white supremacist groups. The bill now heads to Trump s desk to sign, after it passed the House unanimously on Tuesday evening. The Senate also passed the resolution unanimously on Monday night. The resolution, which rejects "White nationalists, White supremacists, the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis, and other hate groups," urges Trump and his cabinet "to use all available resources to address the threats posed by those groups." It also calls on the president and his administration to "speak out against hate groups that espouse racism, extremism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, and White supremacy." Trump has received widespread criticism for his failure to fu

UC Berkeley says 'Free Speech Week' events with Yiannopoulos, Bannon in doubt

UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ says the university is committed to protecting free speech. | Marcio Jose Sanchez/AP Photo BERKELEY, Calif. — More than a month after a conservative student organization announced it would sponsor campus talks by a trio of controversial speakers on the right — including Steve Bannon, Milo Yiannopoulos and Ann Coulter — University of California Berkeley representatives insist the group has repeatedly failed to comply with requests to facilitate the late September “Free Speech Week” events. UC Berkeley assistant vice chancellor for communications Dan Mogulof told POLITICO Tuesday that the student organization Berkeley Patriot — whose membership is estimated by Mogulof at between 5-10 members — “still has not completed the critical steps” necessary to arrange venues for the events it announced with fanfare last month. The conservative students group had said it planned speeches from Sept. 24-

Action to Protect Young Immigrants Already Stumbles in Congress

Supporters of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program at Capitol Hill in Washington last week. WASHINGTON — A week after concerned Republicans promised quick work to shield young, undocumented immigrants from President Trump’s decision to end their federal protections, lawmakers have tied themselves in knots trying to figure out how to proceed — with only six months to find a way forward. If anything, advocates for immigrants brought to this country as children may have lost ground. Representative Mike Coffman, Republican of Colorado, pulled back a petition he had initiated to force the House to take up legislation to protect so-called Dreamers. A Senate Judiciary Committee hearing into the issue was canceled this week. And Representative Bob Goodlatte of Virginia, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said he would not move on any such legislation before he addressed criminal alien gangs and border security. “With all the other things going on rig

Sarah Sanders on Clinton book: Sad

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders slammed Hillary Clinton's new memoir Tuesday, accusing the former secretary of state with running "one of the most negative campaigns in history," adding that the book is a "sad way" for her to continue attacking President Donald Trump. "I think it is sad that after Hillary Clinton ran one of the most negative campaigns in history and lost, and the last chapter of her public life is going to be now defined by propping up book sales with false and reckless attacks," she said during her daily briefing. "And I think that is sad way for her to continue this." Sanders, who seemed prepared for the question, said she was unaware whether Trump is going to read the book, entitled "What Happened." "I would think he is pretty well versed on what happened, and I think it is pretty clear to all of America," she said. Clinton's post-2016 campaign memoir was officially r

Lawmakers want more info on State Department redesign as proposal comes due

Already, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has looked for ways to cut costs at State. | Jacquelyn Martin/AP Photo As Secretary of State Rex Tillerson prepares to restructure the State Department, top lawmakers are demanding more details from the White House about the contentious plan, the outlines of which could be unveiled as soon as this month. In a letter released Tuesday, a bipartisan group of House members asked White House budget director Mick Mulvaney to brief them on his role in the changes coming to the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development, both of which are slated for deep budget cuts that have alarmed lawmakers and the diplomatic community. The lawmakers’ letter comes as State and USAID are due to send Mulvaney a reorganization proposal as early as this week, following up on an executive order issued by President Donald Trump six months ago. The letter also follows a Senate panel’s vot

Here’s What Security Experts Think About The iPhone X’s New Face ID Feature

Security professionals and AI experts say that the "one in a million" failure rate Apple boasted about today is "meaningless." Of the smorgasbord of features stuffed into Apple s new thousand-dollar iPhone X, one of the most intriguing is Face ID — a new feature that lets you unlock your iPhone with your face, after the system has learned your facial features using Apple’s first-ever neural engine. “How do you unlock your phone with iPhone X?” asked Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, onstage at today’s iPhone event. “In the iPhone X, your phone is locked — until you look at it, and it recognizes you. Nothing has ever been simpler, more natural, and effortless.” Here’s how it works: Apple deploys various sensors working in tandem to recognize your face in an instant, using what it calls the TrueDepth camera system. First, a dot projector beams more than 30,000 invisible dots onto your face to

1 dead, suspect in custody in New Hampshire hospital shooting

An active shooter situation was reported at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire on Tuesday. A suspect is in custody after a hospital in New Hampshire was locked down due to an active shooter situation, which authorities described as a "domestic situation." One person was killed during Tuesday's incident. That person's identity has not been released. The incident occurred at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Dartmouth-Hitchcock released the following statement on Twitter: Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon is currently locked down following reports of an active shooter in the hospital. Trump voter fraud panel strikes civil tone in New Hampshire

More than 100 protesters were on hand as the session kicked off Tuesday at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at St. Anselm College, but inside the meeting, the fireworks never materialized. | Holly Ramer/AP Photo MANCHESTER, N.H. — Despite the intense furor over President Donald Trump’s voter-fraud commission, New Hampshire’s trademark civility reigned Tuesday as the panel gathered for its first public meeting outside the protected confines of the White House complex. More than 100 protesters were on hand as the session kicked off, heckling some panelists and VIPs as they were escorted into the parking lot by police. But inside the not-quite-full, 300-person-capacity meeting room at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at St. Anselm College, the fireworks never materialized. Despite the spirited start outside, the mood inside the hall remained largely subdued as wonky panels vetted the security of open source data, i

Because Her Daughter s Now All Grown Up, This Mom Improvised Some Back-To-School Photos

"She s leaving me; Duke will never leave me." This is 18-year-old Kaylin Sellers with her mom, Nikki Stansberry. Next week, Kaylin is leaving their home in Lacey, Washington, for Eastern Washington University. Her mom told BuzzFeed News that she s pretty emotional about it. “She’s my only one, so it’s going to be very tough," Stansberry said. On Wednesday morning, Stansberry said that everyone was posting back-to-school photos on Facebook and that seeing them made her sad. Her daughter said the photos were an annual, and obligatory, tradition. "Whether I liked it or not, my mom always had to get some pictures in," the teen told BuzzFeed News. "This was my first time in 14 years I couldn t take a back-to-school picture," Stansberry said of her now grown-up daughter. That s when she glanced over at her golden doodle.
